London’s Mayor warns of TikTok-promoted robberies on Oxford Street
London’s Mayor, Sadiq Khan, has urgently cautioned the public to avoid the iconic shopping destination, Oxford Street, this Wednesday. This warning comes in response to a video circulating on TikTok, which seems to incite potential robberies.
Khan, representing the Labour Party, described the call for theft as absurd. The origins of this incitement video remain unknown. However, it has compelled city officials to ramp up police presence in the bustling center of British capital.
The Metropolitan Police of London, commonly known as Scotland Yard, announced an enhanced deployment of officers. In addition, a dispersal order has been enforced. Effective until 10:00 local time (09:00 GMT) on Thursday, this order grants law enforcement the authority to mandate people to leave the area. Non-compliance could result in arrest, as per the Met’s guidelines.
Speaking to local media, Mayor Khan voiced his concerns: “I am deeply troubled by this nonsensical act we’ve witnessed on TikTok, urging individuals to flock to Oxford Street.”
He further advised, “If you’ve come across this video, please refrain from heading to Oxford Street. Avoid getting caught up in what could potentially be a high-crime zone.”
In a recent tweet, Scotland Yard stated being “aware” of online speculations “hinting at opportunities to commit crimes on Oxford Street. There will be a significant number of our officers stationed in the area over the next 24 hours. Anyone found engaging in criminal activities will face strict action.
