City of London seeks public input on St. Paul’s Gyratory revamp and new public square naming
The City of London Corporation is calling on local residents, businesses, and community members to share their thoughts on the upcoming transformation of the streets linking the former Museum of London roundabout to the St. Paul’s Underground Station.
After June 2023’s Planning and Transportation Committee gathering, combined with thorough discussions with the local community, a green light was given to the City of London Corporation’s plans to revitalize these streets. The goal is to prioritize pedestrian and cyclist safety by reducing traffic.
Key Highlights from the Proposal
- The introduction of two-way vehicular movements on Newgate Street and St Martin’s Le Grand up to its junction with Angel Street, following the partial removal of the gyratory system.
- Enhanced facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, which include top-notch crossing facilities and dedicated cycle lanes where feasible.
- The unveiling of a spacious new public square, with an area exceeding 3000sqm, surpassing Aldgate Square in size and becoming the Square Mile’s largest.
The City Corporation is avidly seeking public insights on the proposal details to gauge its potential impacts and make final refinements. This consultation will also include discussions on the potential names for the new square, with four options set to be announced soon. Additionally, alterations to bus routes, general traffic pathways, and waiting/loading limitations are part of the proposal.
Shravan Joshi, the Chairman of the City of London’s Planning and Transport Committee, expressed enthusiasm:
“The St Paul’s Gyratory plans align with our commitment to enhancing the City’s environment, especially concerning climate action and air quality. I believe these changes will be monumental for walkers and cyclists. The naming of our new public square offers a chance for the public to be part of this historical milestone, and I urge everyone to join the consultation.”
