A new report reveals the City’s ambition to become a world-leading destination for sport and leisure.
A recent sports analysis has been released, indicating that London is initiating a comprehensive plan to establish itself as a premier global destination for sport and recreation.
The strategy for sports development, titled ‘A Global City of Sport,’ formulated by the City of London Corporation, lays down the strategic plans for sports and recreational activities in the Square Mile for the decade leading up to 2030 and beyond.
The document underscores the entity’s dedication to fostering several large-scale events that draw public participation and audiences, including community fun runs, cycling contests, and basketball tournaments. These events are crucial for stimulating economic activity, highlighting the City’s tourist spots, and promoting physical and mental wellness among individuals.
As the administrative authority of the Square Mile, the City Corporation considers sports an essential element of its aspirations. This emphasis on sports is evident through its pivotal Destination City initiative, aspiring to transform the City into a bustling, full-week hotspot for visitors.
Furthermore, the report details the Corporation’s plans to:
- Develop a collection of open-air sports venues, introducing no-cost fitness apparatus in potentially 12 civic areas within the City;
- Collaborate with allies, such as property developers, to construct new, visually appealing public amenities, for example, open-air rock climbing infrastructures, rooftop pools, and courts for padel games;
- Persistently acknowledge the significant effect of sports on individual well-being, broader economic growth, and the UK’s international stature and commercial ties;
- Conduct a comprehensive evaluation of its existing recreational facilities to optimize user experience;
- Commit financial resources to enhancing the sports infrastructure throughout the Square Mile.
Chris Hayward, the Policy Chairman of the City of London Corporation, commented:
“Our findings emphasize that the UK sports industry is a powerhouse for our economic prosperity and international prominence, potentially generating as much as £4 billion through soft power, commerce, and investment opportunities over the upcoming ten years.
“Beyond job opportunities and capital expenditure, the industry is pivotal in mitigating healthcare expenses by fostering a healthier society.
“However, the implications extend beyond mere financial aspects. The inherent social significance of the UK sports sector is undeniable, acting as a catalyst for transformative experiences and serving as a unifying force across societies.
“In our paramount Destination City project, sport is fundamental, augmenting our appeal as a destination on national and international stages.”
