The 695th Lord Mayor’s celebration is upon us
The City of London is gearing up for its most vibrant and grand occasion on Saturday 11 November, with the historic Lord Mayor’s Show. Anticipate a gathering of over 7,000 participants, 250 horses, and more than 50 elaborately decorated floats, continuing a tradition that has its roots in the 13th century.
Michael Mainelli, a Seattle-native who wears multiple hats as an economist, accountant, and scientist, has the honor of being the 695th Lord Mayor. He’ll be a part of the parade in the iconic golden State Coach, which has been a staple since 1757.
The event is set to draw a massive crowd, with around 250,000 onlookers on the streets and countless more tuning in through BBC One and online streams. Scott Mills, a former BBC Radio 1 presenter, will be offering insights and commentary.
After paying respect with the national two-minute silence for Armistice Day at 11 am, the grand procession will embark from the Lord Mayor’s residence, The Mansion House.
The extensive parade will include representation from City charities, schools, community entities, artists, financial sectors, military bands, and Livery entities. A special float by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry, themed around Ukraine, will symbolize London’s solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Jim Moir, widely recognized as Vic Reeves, an actor, comedian, and artist, has contributed the art for the official event materials and will be seen in the returning ‘Art Bus’ this year.
Taking over from Nicholas Lyons, Michael Mainelli will helm the City of London Corporation for the coming year, with his base at The Mansion House. As Lord Mayor, Mainelli will champion the City on global platforms, leading business expeditions to vital international destinations representing UK’s financial and service sectors.
Michael Mainelli expressed his excitement, emphasizing the unique charm of the Lord Mayor’s Show. He relishes the chance to engage with the public, both present and viewing remotely. The central theme for his term, ‘Connect to Prosper’, aims to highlight the City’s prowess in various sectors and rally professionals to address pressing global issues like climate change and AI.
Safety remains paramount, and the City of London Police will ensure a secure environment throughout the event with both overt and discreet patrols.
