London Stock Exchange’s Julia Hoggett Recognized with City of London Freedom
Julia Hoggett, the CEO of the London Stock Exchange, has been honored with the Freedom of the City of London today. This accolade acknowledges her significant achievements in the UK’s financial sector and her efforts in highlighting women’s roles in the City. Alongside her CEO position, Julia leads Digital & Securities Markets for the London Stock Exchange Group and chairs the Capital Markets Industry Taskforce, aiming to progress the UK’s capital markets.
Before this, Hoggett played a key role in the Financial Conduct Authority, starting as the head of the Wholesale Banking Supervision Department in 2014. She began her financial journey at JP Morgan and later held pivotal roles at DEPFA ACS BANK in Ireland and Bank of America Merrill Lynch. With a background in Social and Political Sciences from Newnham College, Cambridge University, Julia also researched public policy in East Africa at Kings College.
She’s been recognized six times by Financial News as one of Europe’s top 100 influential women in finance. Additionally, she has been an advocate for diversity and inclusion in the City for over twenty years.
Lord Mayor Nicholas Lyons, alongside City Corporation member, Florence Keelson-Anfu, championed her Freedom award. Both attended the special Guildhall event. Post-ceremony, Hoggett expressed her gratitude and spoke of the significance of London’s unique financial landscape and its history. Lord Mayor Lyons and Keelson-Anfu both praised Hoggett’s impactful career, emphasizing her dedication to diversity and advocacy for women.
The Freedom of the City of London is an age-old honor, with its origins in 1237. Historically, it permitted recipients to engage in trade. Nowadays, it serves to recognize individuals’ significant contributions to London and public life. Some recent notable recipients include Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Amy Lamé, Sir Jon Cunliffe, and Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert, known for her work on the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
