City of London Corporation to upgrade electric vehicle charging points across the Square Mile
Qwello UK, a leading Pan-European Charge Point operator, has received approval from the City of London Corporation for a comprehensive upgrade of the Square Mile’s electric vehicle (EV) charging points. This initiative forms part of the City Corporation’s commitment to promoting renewable energy and achieving net-zero status by 2040.
The advanced charging technology promises to deliver a more reliable, user-friendly and accessible charging experience for all electric vehicle users. Key features include contactless payment, a reservation service via the Qwello app, 24/7 customer support, and a one-hand operable, retractable Type 2 plug compatible with all European and US EV-connection standards. This revamp is expected to minimize trip hazards, promoting safety, convenience and compatibility.
The upgrade begins on August 7, being implemented in stages at the City’s owned car parks. These include Minories Car Park, Baynard House Car Park, 23 London Wall Car Park, Tower Hill Car Park, and Smithfield Car Park. Regular updates on the upgrade progress can be found on the project’s dedicated website.
The Chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transport Committee, Shravan Joshi, noted that these initiatives have already contributed to a reduction of over 55% in the City’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions since 2008. He added that the City’s Climate Action and Air Quality strategies have delivered a cleaner and safer environment for the residents, workers, and visitors of the Square Mile.
Martin Hale, Managing Director of Qwello UK, stated his pride in having been chosen to upgrade the EV charging points at these prime locations, matching the standards enjoyed by other European cities including Stockholm, Berlin, Frankfurt, and Madrid. The company’s recent successes have been based on core principles such as prioritizing the driver, ensuring high operational uptime, preventing nuisance parking, meeting accessibility standards, and contributing to local social value.
