The environmental awards in London mark three decades of recognition for excellence in environmental initiatives
The 30th anniversary of London’s prestigious Clean City Awards, organized by the City of London Corporation, celebrated businesses in the Square Mile that demonstrated exceptional commitment to enhancing environmental sustainability and cleanliness. The event brought together numerous business leaders united by a shared dedication to environmental improvement.
The 2024 award winners and categories include:
- Savills (20 Fenchurch Street) for Air Quality & Climate Action, saving 3,780kw of energy through their ‘Go Dark’ project.
- CBRE (The St. Botolph Building) for Communications & Engagement, recognized for various events, including a beach clean, and implementing an electronic recycling dashboard.
Barings and Nomura (joint winners) for Moving towards a Circular Economy, with Barings composting 78,000 catering gloves and Nomura reducing general waste by 39%. - CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP for Becoming a Plastic-free City, collaborating with Vegware to create compostable disposables and soil for their ‘green’ rooftop.

- Mary Durcan, Chair of the City Corporation’s Port Health and Environmental Services Committee, emphasized the scheme’s three-decade legacy in recognizing businesses leading waste reduction and environmental efforts. The Clean City Awards scheme not only supports businesses but also aligns with the City of London’s Climate Action Strategy, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2027 and the entire Square Mile by 2040.
Businesses in the Square Mile are encouraged to apply for the scheme, offering benefits such as recognition, rewards, best practice meetings, networking opportunities, and participation in the annual award ceremony. The City Corporation itself has made significant strides, reducing annual carbon emissions by 66% since 2018 and committing to a fully electric vehicle fleet by 2025. The organization manages vast green spaces, removing an estimated 16,000 tonnes of carbon annually, contributing to its goal of a sustainable and environmentally friendly Square Mile.
