City of London extends ‘al fresco’ dining licenses to boost hospitality sector
The City of London Corporation has announced an extension of ‘al fresco’ dining licenses for Square Mile pubs, bars, cafes, and restaurants, allowing them to continue offering outdoor dining experiences until September 2024. This decision is part of the City Corporation’s ongoing efforts to support the hospitality sector, which was severely affected by the pandemic.
Recognizing the vital role of these businesses in creating a vibrant social scene in the City, stimulating the economy as major employers, and attracting tourists, the City Corporation is committed to facilitating their recovery.
The pavement licensing policy, introduced by the government in July 2020 to aid the hospitality sector’s post-pandemic recovery, enables businesses to secure permission for outdoor seating quickly. This initiative has proven highly popular among Square Mile businesses, with 176 active licenses currently in place, all of which are expected to reapply under the extended provisions.
James Tumbridge, Chairman of the City Corporation’s Licensing Committee, commented, “As footfall continues to rise post-pandemic, ‘al fresco’ dining has contributed significantly to the lively atmosphere in the City. Our goal is to sustain this vibrancy and ensure that our establishments can utilize outdoor spaces when appropriate. Extending these licenses is just one of the many ways we are supporting businesses.”
Shravan Joshi, Chairman of the City Corporation’s Planning and Transportation Committee, added, “Outdoor dining licenses have been an immensely beneficial policy for the Square Mile. It’s wonderful to see that workers, visitors, and residents will be able to enjoy ‘al fresco’ dining here, especially in favorable weather conditions. This policy not only supports the thriving hospitality sector but also enhances our public spaces, aligning with the ‘Destination City’ policy to make the Square Mile an attractive, inclusive, seven-day-a-week visitor destination for all.”
