Hundreds of Londoners to benefit from new City Corporation affordable homes in Lewisham
A groundbreaking event has marked the commencement of a City of London Corporation initiative to construct 110 new affordable housing units in the London Borough of Lewisham. This project encompasses the creation of a community room, an estate office, recreational and play areas for families, as well as various landscaping and ecological improvements aimed at enhancing the living conditions for residents.
This undertaking is intended to provide assistance to individuals currently waiting for housing in Lewisham Council and the City Corporation. The construction is underway at the Mais House and Otto Close Garages sites, located within the City Corporation’s Sydenham Hill Estate.
Upon completion, a diverse range of one, two, three, and four-bedroom homes will be made available to address the local housing demands and benefit numerous families in need.
The City Corporation, which manages 12 housing estates throughout London, is committed to providing social housing to over 3,100 residents across various boroughs, including the City of London, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, and Tower Hamlets.
Ruby Sayed, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Community and Children’s Services Committee, expressed excitement about the project, emphasizing its significance in delivering more than 100 affordable homes for Londoners. She also highlighted the importance of addressing high housing costs in London to maintain the city’s competitiveness and workforce retention.
Councillor Brenda Dacres, Cabinet Member for Housing Development and Planning at Lewisham Council, emphasized the crucial role this social housing development will play in alleviating the housing crisis and reducing the number of people living in inadequate or temporary accommodations.
The London Borough of Lewisham is experiencing significant demand for social housing, with over 10,000 individuals on the housing register, while the City of London Corporation’s waiting list comprises 910 people seeking affordable housing opportunities.
