City of London Corporation achieves planning consent for the second phase of works to the Barbican podium
The City of London Corporation has received planning and listed building consent for the highly anticipated second phase of the public realm transformation and landscaping works on the Barbican Estate Podium. This significant development will further enhance the iconic Barbican area.
The focus of this phase will be on crucial waterproofing and drainage refurbishment, with specific attention given to the areas surrounding Ben Jonson Place, Breton House, and Cromwell High Walk. Over time, the existing waterproofing membrane has deteriorated, posing risks to the concrete structure and the spaces below it. This comprehensive refurbishment is essential to ensure the long-term integrity and sustainability of the podium.
The Barbican podium, situated above Beech Street, serves as an important pedestrian high walk route and a vibrant public realm space. However, it has faced challenges related to water ingress. With this second phase, the City of London Corporation aims to tackle these issues head-on while also exploring opportunities to introduce more green spaces, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal and environmental quality of the area.
The key objectives of the project are multifaceted. First and foremost, the project will involve the replacement of the deteriorated waterproof membrane, offering enhanced protection against water infiltration. Additionally, the City of London Corporation is committed to expanding the extent of soft landscaping and introducing more greenery, promoting biodiversity and improving the overall ecological balance of the podium.
Importantly, the project seeks to create an accessible and inclusive space that caters to the needs of all visitors. By improving accessibility, the City of London Corporation aims to ensure that everyone can enjoy the Barbican Estate Podium and its amenities comfortably and without limitations.
Furthermore, the project emphasizes the preservation of the Barbican’s unique heritage. As a celebrated example of Brutalist architecture, the Barbican holds great cultural significance. The City of London Corporation is dedicated to maintaining the character and distinctive qualities of the podium while implementing necessary improvements.
Aligned with the City Corporation’s Climate Action Strategy, the second phase of the project plays a vital role in future-proofing the Barbican. By incorporating sustainable design principles, the City of London Corporation aims to enhance water management practices, improve the microclimate, and contribute to the overall resilience and environmental sustainability of the area.
Building upon the success of the award-winning Phase One, completed in 2015, this second phase represents another significant milestone in the revitalization of the Barbican Estate Podium. The City of London Corporation remains committed to creating a thriving, inclusive, and environmentally conscious public realm for residents, visitors, and the wider community to enjoy for years to come.
