New houses planned for Charles de Gaulle’s Frognal House
Plans are underway for the construction of new residences and a swimming pool at the historical site of Charles de Gaulle’s Frognal House in Hampstead, previously inhabited by the former French president during his WWII exile as head of the Free French forces.
The property, a Grade II-listed building dating back to the mid-18th century at 99 Frognal, was listed for sale in 2021 for £15 million after being utilized as a convent and for student housing. The current owners aim to restore the building to its original state while also removing a 1970s addition.
They have submitted a planning application to Camden Council for approval to not only refurbish Frognal House but also to construct three additional houses to its north, with plans for a new extension housing a swimming pool and sauna beneath it. The project involves the demolition of an existing extension considered out of character with the original structure, the restoration of the house’s historic roof, and significant garden landscaping.
Further information and the opportunity for public comment on the proposal are available through Camden Council’s planning portal under the reference 2024/0030/P until February 21.
